My aunt married this handsome men in her 30's. She then moved halfway across the world with him. He started showing his "true colors" and started beating her, cheating on her, abusing her mentally, physically and financially. He would beat her to the point of her having to be hospitalized and then he'd buy her flowers and beg her to come back. It lasted 50 years.
She was so abused that she had developed deep anxiety, physical problems and she was deeply afraid and paranoid of everything. She barely left the house and when she did, she freaked out. For as far as I can remember, we (my mom, my sister and I) would ask her constantly to just move in with us and to forget about him. She always said that she didn't want to, that it was her marriage, she had to live it and fix it. We eventually gave up on trying to make her leave and focused on making her happy regardless of what was happening.
Anyways, he died a couple days ago. I can absolutely not recognize her. She is laughing, she is happy, she is going not, not complaining about her body hurting... I don't know, she says she feels "free." She told me yesterday that, yes, she did miss him, that it feels unreal, that she is saddened that he is gone but that she just feel so free, that she feels like she's given a second chance to start over with no fears and no restraints.
What really made me want to write this is that this morning she called me saying that she was going to take a taxi and going to go dress shopping for her husband's exposition. She was so excited and proud to tell me... She hasn't gone out alone in years.
I have no real goal sharing this story, I'm just so happy for my aunt that she finally feels free and good. I'm also really sad that she's in her 70's and starting to re-enjoy life. I guess what I'm trying to say is enjoy your life, if something feels wrong, fix it but don't swell over things that aren't worth fixing, move on.
