ELI5: How come Google, Apple, or Microsoft can't stand up to the government like Scientology?

I read, on a TIL here, that Scientology is considered a religion, and exempt, because it filed so many lawsuits against the government that they had to negotiate to get anywhere.

What did Scientology do right that the others can't figure out how to stop the government from strongarming them? I get the patriot act changed things and they're different eras, but same thing applies.

Can't they just not cooperate and tangle the government up till it gives in?
