ELI5: Why is dialogue in movies whisper quiet, then gunshots and explosions happen and damn near blow your speakers?

It's extremely annoying.

EDIT: I probably should've noted in the very beginning that I'm watching movies using laptop speakers sitting right in front of me. I spend half the movie adjusting volumes, but for people looking for a solution, this has actually worked so far
