I read, on a TIL here, that Scientology is considered a religion, and exempt, because it filed so many lawsuits against the government that they had to negotiate to get anywhere.
What did Scientology do right that the others can't figure out how to stop the government from strongarming them? I get the patriot act changed things and they're different eras, but same thing applies.
Can't they just not cooperate and tangle the government up till it gives in?

I mean the only thing I can think of is that it was staged. Any professional magicians out there know how this trick can possibly work without prior arragements?
Edit: I probably should have been a little more specific. This question is regarding his last trick with the 7 of hearts.

Hello reddit friends, this is René Redzepi, here to answer as many of your questions as time permits.
About me: I am a chef from Denmark, son of an Albanian Muslim immigrant and a Danish mother. I trained in many restaurants around the world before returning home to Copenhagen and opening a restaurant called Noma in 2003. Our restaurant celebrates the Nordic region’s ingredients and aims to present a kind of cooking that express its location and the seasons, drawing on a local network of farmers, foragers, and purveyors. Noma has held 2 Michelin stars since 2007 and was been voted Restaurant Magazine’s “Best Restaurant in the World” in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014. In January we moved the entire restaurant to Japan for a 5 week popup where we created a completely new menu comprised only of local Japanese ingredients. It was one of the most fantastic experiences I’ve been a part of, and a learning journey for the entire team.
I am also the founder of MAD, a not-for-profit organization that works to expand our knowledge of food to make every meal a better meal; not just at restaurants, but every meal cooked and served. Each year we gather some of the brightest minds of the food industry to discuss issues that are local, global, and personal.
MAD recently relaunched its website where you can watch talks from all four symposiums (for free) as well as all of our original essays & articles: www.madfeed.co.
I’m also married, and my wife Nadine Levy Redzepi and I have three daughters: Arwen, Genta, and Ro. Favorite thing in the world, watermelon: you eat, you drink, and you wash your face.

This is my first post on nosleep, but I feel you guys should know about this. If you want to get to the ‘meat’ of the story, you can skip ahead to the 4th paragraph. Growing up I always feared monsters. Even in college, which most would consider to be the time when you can be called an adult, my greatest fears were the monsters under my bed, in the closet or at the window. I would always tell myself how silly this was seeing as I was an adult at this point and I was still afraid of something I knew did not exist. That was until……. I met my wife. But before I tell you what happened, let me elaborate on how I met my wife to be and how much she means to me.
I met Natalie in college. I was a nerdy guy, yet she saw in me something that no other girl in my life had. She was an extremely kind person, who always had the sweetest of intentions. As I spent more time with her, I realized how many things we had in common. To me she was the most beautiful girl in the world. I could stare into her green eyes for the rest of my life, and that’s what I chose to do when I proposed and we finally got married.
Fast forward to married life, I am working now, while she is working on an online masters degree. Life is good, life is actually perfect, too perfect. Ever since we got married, I’ve told her everything, my deepest secrets, my deepest feelings, and most importantly, my deepest fears. I remember when I first told her about my silly fear of monsters, at first she laughed it off. But over time, she noticed how I would sometimes shiver in bed, lying awake in fear. Being the sweet heart that she is, she would hold me, and tell me it would be alright. My wife became my protector, she became the one to keep my fears in check. Her face became that of an angel to me, one that would protect me from whatever scary things life had in store for me. I came to trust those beautiful green eyes, and every time I saw her, I knew I was safe.
Now to the more……weird things that have been happening of late. The first incident that I can recall that could be defined as strange happened at 3:00 am one night. I woke up feeling extremely thirsty, and being the fearful guy that I am, grabbed the flash light to go get some water. As soon as I turned on the flashlight I noticed my wife wasn’t in bed. I looked over to the bathroom and the light was on and I could hear the water running so I assumed she was there. Half asleep I walked downstairs to the kitchen and almost had a heart attack when I saw my wife standing in a corner drinking water. As soon as I saw her though, I felt safe. She smiled at me as she sipped the water from the glass. I was too tired and I mumbled something about how hot it is as I got some water. She continued to smile at me as I finished my water and headed upstairs. As I walked back upstairs I called out that she should come back to bed seeing as it’s so late. When I get back to my room, there she was, sound asleep. This was the moment I became wide awake. I could have sworn she was downstairs having water. Afraid to go back downstairs, I woke her up and told her what happened. Half asleep, half upset, she comforted me and told me to go back to bed. The next morning she joked about how I’m so afraid of the dark that I see her everywhere as my protector. “Besides, I was using the bathroom when you thought I was out of bed” she claimed. With that warm smile, how could I think otherwise?
A week later, another strange incident. This was in broad day light, while on a Saturday morning, Natalie woke me up at 11:00 am and told me she was going to get groceries. At around 11:30 am I finally got out of bed and dressed up for a late brunch with my beautiful wife. I went to the kitchen and found her drinking a glass of water. I smiled and said “Back so soon honey?” She didn’t reply, just smiled as she sipped on her water. Before I could approach her, the doorbell rang and I immediately went to go see who it was. I opened the door. Yes, it was my wife, back with all the groceries. “Oh help me with all of this will you?” she jokingly snapped as she put down the paper bags by the door. As soon as she saw my color drained face, she knew something was wrong. She sat me down, got me some water and I told her what happened. This time it was in broad daylight, and I knew what I saw. As much as I had come to adore her beautiful green eyes, for the first time, I saw in them a strange fear. My wife was the strong one, never afraid. She told me there is something she should have told me a long time ago. She said this happened to her as a kid, a lot. Where her parents and siblings would see her in places they knew she wasn’t. They could never explain these occurrences, but seeing as it caused no harm, they came to live with it without really questioning these encounters.
It took me a few months to process everything she had told me, but I started to live with it also. Like I said, my true perception of fear was monsters, not my beautiful wife. Several similar incidents happen, for instance I would see her sitting in bed, only to find her cooking in the kitchen downstairs. And in all these instances, when I would interact with this ‘entity’ that I still saw as my wife, she would smile and not say anything. I actually came to find comfort in seeing my wife all the time, always smiling, always happy, and always perfect. It is important to note, however, that in all of these incidents, there was never any overlap. Meaning I never saw her in two places simultaneously. I guess any sane person would have called out to their wife when they thought they were seeing the entity. But like I said, I found comfort in her green eyes, in her smiling face, so honestly I didn’t really care.
Then today, everything changed. My wife told me she was going to visit her grandparents who live an hour away from where we do. She invited me to go, but seeing as it was a Sunday and I just wanted to be lazy, I told her to go ahead without me. This is when it finally happened. The overlap. I was in my living room watching TV when I got up to get myself a coke. There she was, my wife again, sipping water from a glass and just smiling. I was so used to it by now, knowing this was the ‘entity’, I smiled and said “And it is nice to see you are still watching over me!” She smile and continued to look at me with those beautiful green eyes I had grown so fond of. That’s when the phone rang and I turned away from the ‘entity’ to pick it up. “Hey sweetie, I’m going to run a little late since granny insists on me staying for lunch!” It was my wife, and as soon as I heard her voice, I heard a glass shatter, which my wife on the phone also heard. I turned around and saw that the ‘entity’ was now glaring at me, the smile no longer there. But rather, a very disturbing grin. She was pointing at me, with her head tilted at a perfect 90 degree angle. But that wasn’t what disturbed me, it was her eyes. They were no longer the green that I found so much comfort in. They were pitch black, like those demons in the movies. I stared at her as I was at a complete loss of words. “Honey, is everything ok? Did you drop something?” my wife asked on the phone. I whispered back into the phone “I didn’t, she did…….” At this point my wife screamed into the phone “HANG UP AND LOOK AWAY!!!!” I don’t know how I found the strength to do so, but I did exactly what she said. When I opened my eyes a split second later, she was gone. Confused and scared, I called my wife back who said she was already on the way “It shouldn’t have happened, it shouldn’t have overlapped, they said it wouldn’t……..they said she was harmless………”
I am too scared to just sit around and wait, I still keep looking over my shoulder. My wife should be home anytime now. As soon as she gets back I will ask her who she meant by “they” and what the hell is going on. She knows something and I have to know what it is. Never did I think that the one I hold so near and dear to my heart, the one who protects me, could become the monster that I fear the most.
P.S. If enough of you are interested, I will continue my story and update when I find out more information.
TIFU Reddit, and i dont think i will ever forget this.
quick preface: i am a 20 [M] in college at a state university. i usually dont post so if this post probably sucks but whatever, i needed to get this off my chest.
So this FU actually occurred today... while at the local headshop (preparing for april 20) there was a really attractive red haired girl with quite possibly one of the most radiantly attractive smiles i have ever seen in my life standing in line waiting to be helped. as she was waiting, her phone went off and her ringer was r2d2. me, wanting to strike up conversation, told her that was an awesome ringtone, to which she replied that she is a huge star wars fan, which is awesome because i am too! we make small talk, definitely mentioning the new trailer that just was released and whatnot. we were hitting it off well, and we turned out to have so many things in common: we are both huge fans of LoTR, super into gaming, specifically old nintendo console gaming and pc gaming, and obviously smoking (we were at a head shop so that is obvious). then, the absolute kicker of the whole situation was that she browses reddit! everything about this girl is 10/10 and when she walked out the door i thought my friend i was with was gonna kill me for not asking for her number. I've fucked up a lot in my life, theres no doubt about that; but i think this might be one of those fuck ups that haunt me forever.
TL;DR: saw pretty girl who is also fellow redditor, hit it off super well, didnt ask for phone number.
edit: didn't expect this to blow up at all... for those wondering, I'm from southern Louisiana, I'm not gonna go any more specific than that location. I'm pretty sure that if she reads this, she would know who I am. even the guy working in the store was telling me how I fucked up not getting your number... also, for those taking me so literally on calling her perfect, yes I know I only met her for 5 min, I didn't mean that's she's literally perfect, she just seems like a cool person and I'd like to get to know her better if the opportunity were to arise. also, thanks for the gold strangers!
edit 2: so to clear some things up, yes i go to LSU. no, i actually was not at the ra shop surprisingly enough; my buddy and i were at a 24 hour smoke shop just off campus, those of you familiar with LSU should know what im talking about.

Hi Reddit!
This week, Titanic-discoverer Dr. Robert Ballard’s Exploration Vessel E/V Nautilus departed on our most ambitious expedition season yet, exploring from the Gulf of Mexico to British Columbia. The public can watch the real-time action live from the seafloor in high-definition streaming video and participate in live interactions with shore-based audiences via NautilusLive.org.
April 20th marks the fifth anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and we have scientists from Woods Hole and Texas A&M and Penn State to talk about the live research we're doing in the Gulf of Mexico examining the biological impact of the spill as well as studying the fundamental behavior of hydrocarbon seeps as they disperse in the water column to better predict the impact of any future oil spills.
The Ocean Exploration Trust was founded in 2008 by Dr. Robert Ballard to explore the ocean, seeking out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, physics, and chemistry while pushing the boundaries of STEM education and technological innovation.
We'll back at 1 pm EDT (10 am PDT, 6 pm UTC) to answer questions, ask us anything!
Mod note: There is a subreddit for Nautilus Live: /r/NautilusLive/ It looks like it could use more subscribers!

Way easier than saying "Yeah he's short...dark hair...glasses..probably crying."
Just as a preface I am a college student and a year shy of being the glorious two-one so naturally like every felonious college kid, I have obtained a fake ID. Anyways, so earlier this morning I went to the gas station to buy beer for the upcoming week since it it going to be a hectic week I knew the only time I could go would be this morning. I walk into the gas station and grab a case of beer and proceed to the counter. I plop the beer on the counter and am asked for my ID. Now before I continue I need to preface that I have terrible handwriting. Like that of a second graders. No idea why the elementary school decided I should pass but they did me wrong. Anyways, so just remember I have terrible handwriting. I give the ID to her without fear and just wait for it back. She takes a look at it and tells me to get out the store. Confused I ask her what the big deal is and she tells me that my ID is obviously fake and that I need to get out now. I have never ever had this problem before so I tell her that its not fake at all and she turns it around and points to my signature. She says there is no way someone has that bad of writing except for someone trying to forge a signature since it obviously wasn't natural. Without hesitation, me and all my brilliance decide to pull out my real ID to prove that hey its a really good fake ID and I just have really bad handwriting. I point to the signature on my real and she just gives me that "Oh my god I can't believe we let people like you breed" look and starts to just laugh. Needless to say I am having a dry week and living a life without any fakes from here on out.
TL;DR: Forrest Gump and I compete for last spot in the class

Two weeks ago my grandma passed away at 94. I wasn't that close to her, as she lived across the country and I rarely saw her. The funeral was scheduled for a week later (last week), and I accepted to be one of the coffin bearers (not sure what you call those in english). After the church ceremony, we drove 10 minute to the cemetery, where she would be buried. The hearse drove her all the way to her graveside. We waited a while for everyone to gather, there was a ton of people, most I had never seen before. It was also the first funeral I had been to, and being there with all these people I didn't know made me very uncomfortable. The shit weather didn't make it any better, it had been raining for three days, and it was also raining this day. We carried her from the coffin wagon to her grave, where we would lower her down. It was kindda awkward getting into position and connecting the ropes to the handles. On both sides of the grave two planks were placed on the ground, so we could stand on them as it was so pretty muddy. When I stood up on it, I instantly felt how "wonky" it was. Everything went fine, we lowered the coffin slowly, and we let go of the ropes when we felt it hit the bottom of the grave. Then it all went wrong. We were three people on the plank, my brother, uncle, and me, with my uncle being in the middle. My brother stood off the plank, and my uncle still had one foot on it, when I felt the plank slide under me. I thought I was going to fall into the the grave, and everything went into slow-motion mode. Without thinking I grabbed onto my uncles arm. While I found my balance, he slipped and lost his. The next thing that happened was something so terrible, I will never forget it in my life. He fell straight into my grandma's grave, and landed on her coffin (which thankfully didn't break, it was terrible enough as it was). I remember the gasp from the crowd, and my mother's face in disbelief. The rest of the day was too painful to think of.
TL;DR: I lost balance after lowering my grandma's coffin, grabbed onto my uncle's arm and accidentally pulled him in.

First off, yes, I'm a guy. I've been happily married to my wife now for 25 years. We have been through a lot together but I have never seen anyone that has remained so calm and cool through it all. We had three wonderful children together and she just recently went back to finish her education degree to become a teacher in Louisiana - which believe me is more about pride than prize.
A couple of years ago, she was in a pretty bad accident. We were shopping together in a Dollar General and when we were at the checkout she had sent me back to pick up a fan for her mother. While I was back there, I heard a horrendous racket, glass and metal rending and she screamed my name. I never felt my heart catch the way it did when I got to the front of the store and realized that an elderly driver had hit the gas instead of the brake and plunged into the store, hitting my wife.
I was able to get a cooler off of her that had fallen on her and waited with her and went with her to the hospital. She had to have work done on her knee from all the glass that had gotten impaled into it, but it was nothing short of a miracle she wasn't hurt further.
That's when we learned of another miracle. During an ultrasound and x-ray to make sure her back was okay, we discovered that not only was she missing one of her kidneys, she also did not have an ovary. Apparently she had a birth defect that had gone undetected all this time. This wonderful woman had unwittingly put her life on the line three times to give us a family and has given me so much that I can never thank her enough for. I was medically discharged from the military and went on disability and she has held a job, helped take care of me and helped with out three children - ages 20, 17, and 13 through some of the craziest stuff I can imagine.
She is a strong, resolute woman that takes pleasure in teaching her children in the classroom. And I could not ask for a better woman to love and call my wife.
